The Demon of the Stomach was among them, sliding its presence into the infant's abdomen and claiming the organ as its own. What remained in the boy's body was a hollow, a gap where digestion should have been a quiet, automatic process.

In the 2019 anime's depiction, the demon takes a form that is viscerally unsettling: a mass of glistening tissue, writhing appendages, and a mouth-like orifice that evokes the interior of a digestive tract. In Their Own Story

The rain had not stopped for three days. Hyakkimaru sat beneath the eaves of a ruined shrine, his wooden arms resting on his knees, watching the mud swirl in the gutter below. Dororo had found a half-rotten fish and was trying to make him eat it. He took a bite. The taste was there — salt, iron, the faint sweetness of the flesh — but nothing happened after. No warmth in the belly. No settling. Just the same endless, hollow gnawing that had been his companion since before he could walk.

He set the fish down. His fingers, the wooden ones, made a soft clicking sound against the wood of the shrine floor. Somewhere beneath his ribs, in the dark space where a stomach should have been, something shifted. A low, wet sound. Not a growl. Not a roar. A gurgle, like water moving through a pipe that should have been empty.

He stood. The rain hissed where it struck the ground around his feet. And in the hollow of his body, the thing that was not a stomach opened its eyes.
