In the feudal world of Dororo, the warlord Daigoku, desperate for an army that could not be broken, made a covenant with the oni. The price was his unborn child: every limb, sense, and vital organ would be claimed by a separate demon at the moment of birth. The Spine Oni is among those who answered the call, sliding into the infant's back and coiling around each vertebra like a parasite made of shadow and bone. From that moment the boy could not sit, could not lean, could not feel the simple relief of stretching after a long road.

The oni that inhabit Hyakkimaru are not mindless beasts. Each one possesses a temperament, a hunger, and a territorial pride over the flesh it has claimed. The Spine Oni, in particular, is associated with rigidity and control—it resists the boy's attempts to move, to twist, to bend, as though punishing him for the very act of being alive in a body it considers its own. It feeds on his pain and the fear of collapse, growing stronger each time he doubts whether he will fall.

When Hyakkimaru finally turns his blade and his prosthetic limbs against the Spine Oni, the battle is less about raw strength than about endurance and the refusal to crumple. Rain hammered the thatched roof of the abandoned shrine as Hyakkimaru pressed his back against the cold stone pillar. The Spine Oni writhed beneath his skin, a cold serpent threading through his vertebrae, and every muscle in his shoulders screamed to buckle. He could feel it laughing in there—a dry, grinding sound, like teeth on bone. Dororo, crouched by the dying fire, watched his silhouette shudder and whispered, "You don't have to fight it tonight." He did not answer. He simply straightened, one vertebra at a time, until the demon hissed and recoiled. Then he drew his blade, set the flat of it against his own spine, and began to cut his way back to himself.
