Hyakkimaru's prosthetic right leg, crafted by the wandering physician Jukai, is a masterwork of articulated metal and leather. The rain had turned the mountain path into a river of mud. Hyakkimaru ran, his prosthetic right leg driving through the muck with a rhythmic clank that echoed off the cliff face. Beside him, Dororo scrambled over a fallen log, breathless and laughing, calling out that he was going too fast, that she couldn't keep up.

But the leg was not his. Not yet.

Halfway up the switchback, the metal knee locked. The demon's laughter rolled through the joint like a grinding stone, and Hyakkimaru's foot slammed into the earth, sending a spray of black water into the air. He felt the thing shift beneath the leather and steel, stretching, testing the seams of its prison. His left hand found his sword hilt. His right hand gripped the leg, fingers digging into the cold iron.

'Not today,' he said, and the word was a promise to a part of himself he hadn't met yet.

The demon howled. The rain kept falling. And somewhere below, in a village that had nothing to do with either of them, a warlord's shadow thinned by one more degree.

To reclaim the leg, Hyakkimaru must confront the demon in direct combat. The sequence typically involves the demon manifesting or asserting full control over the limb, forcing a fight in which Hyakkimaru must sever the demon's hold. Once the demon is destroyed or banished, the space it occupied is filled with living tissue—his true right leg, warm and bleeding and his own. The narrative cost is the loss of the demon's speed bonus temporarily, replaced by the slower, more human gait of a newly grown limb that must be relearned. Each reclamation also weakens the broader network of demons, making the remaining ones more desperate.
