In the cosmology of Dororo, the twelve demons are not summoned from the outside so much as they are the price paid for a lord's ambition. Daikokuden, desperate to secure his fiefdom, offered his newborn son's body as a vessel. Each oni was slotted into a different organ like a key into a lock, and from that moment the boy's flesh became a shared territory. The Kidney Oni, like the others, feeds on the host's ki, keeping the organ dormant while it fattens on stolen vigor. It does not think in human terms; it is hunger given a shape, a slow grinding pressure against the soft tissue of the kidney that the boy feels only as a dull ache he has learned to ignore.

The demons are bound to one another through the original pact. Destroying one weakens the collective, which is why the remaining oni grow more desperate and aggressive as Hyakkimaru's tally of victories climbs. The Kidney Oni, in its small way, is both a predator and a hostage—tethered to a body it did not choose, feeding on a child it cannot speak to.

When the moment of reclamation comes, the demon's true form is torn free from the flesh and forced into the open, where it can be struck down. In its place, the kidney stirs back to life, and Hyakkimaru feels, for the first time, the warm pulse of his own blood filtering through tissue that is finally, wholly his.

In Their Own Story

Rain hammered the thatched roof of the waystation while Hyakkimaru sat cross-legged on the packed-earth floor, his prosthetic hands resting on his knees. Dororo was asleep in the corner, a half-eaten rice cake clutched in her fist. The ache in his lower back had been building for three days—a deep, grinding pull, as if something behind his ribs were slowly turning a key. He pressed his palm flat against his flank and felt the faint, wrong warmth of it: the Kidney Oni, restless, tasting his blood through the membrane. He closed his eyes. Tomorrow he would find it. Tomorrow he would tear it out of him, piece by piece, and hold it up to the sky like a captured insect before driving his sword through its core. For now, there was only the rain, the ache, and the small sound of a sleeping child breathing.

Visual/design notes: As with the other body-demons in the 2019 anime, the Kidney Oni takes on a grotesque, semi-organic form when forced out of the body—think sinewy, wet, with too many limbs and a face that is almost a mouth. Its coloration tends toward deep reds and bruised purples, evoking the interior of the body. In its dormant state it is invisible, felt only as a dull pressure.

Arc and recovery fight: The demon is located through Hyakkimaru's growing awareness of his own body. The confrontation is intimate and visceral—Hyakkimaru must physically dislodge it, and the fight is less a grand duel than a struggle to rip a parasite free. Once exposed, it is struck down, and the kidney reactivates. The emotional beat is quiet: a boy feeling his own organ work for the first time.
